Application Based Assessment of Frictional Properties for Haptic Data Visualisation
نویسندگان
چکیده
Haptic devices can be used to present visualisations such as graphs and charts to the blind community. Many adopt a visually mediated method of presentation, whereby the haptic graphs are similar in form and structure to their visual counterparts. Exploration through point interaction force-feedback devices has been shown to be possible, but it is often cumbersome and slow. It may be possible to adopt a new method of encoding using more haptically salient properties. In this study, data in bar charts were encoded using friction. This was compared to standard (height-based) haptic bar chart representations using visually-impaired participants. Results showed that that performance using friction encoding was significantly worse than the standard bar charts.

Warping to Enhance 3D User Interfaces
Cartoon animation techniques have previously been used to enhance the illusion of direct manipulation in 2D graphical user interfaces. In particular, animation may be used to convey a feeling of substance to the objects being manipulated by the user. This paper presents an expansion of this concept to 3D graphical object manipulation. A standard set of 3D direct manipulation operations have bee...
متن کامل6-DoF Haptic Rendering of Static Coulomb Friction Using Linear Programming
Simulating frictional contact between objects with complex geometry is important for 6-DoF haptic rendering applications. For example, friction determines whether components can be navigated past narrow clearances in virtual assembly. State-of-the-art haptic rendering of frictional contact either augments penalty contact with frictional penalty springs, which do not prevent sliding and cannot r...
متن کاملInclusive Data Visualisation: A Multidisciplinary Approach
Data are important sources of information and knowledge. To explore a more inclusive means of communicating data, a team composed of seven researchers in the UK from different disciplines conducted a series of workshops: the first to share stateof-the-art data visualisation techniques in various disciplines and to identify data visualisation challenges; the second to extract universal principle...
متن کاملSummary of Design Guidelines arising from the use of Haptics for Visualisation by Blind and Visually Impaired Computer Users
This report contains a summary of design guidelines developed during the Multivis project. They include recommendations for use of haptic properties in visualisations, techniques for effectively rendering haptic graphs, a discussion of methods to overcome the limitations of point interaction devices, and suggestions for creation of digital graphs.
متن کاملNew Views on Haptic Graph Visualisation
This paper proposes that current approaches to haptic graph visualisation (by simply presenting a simple haptic equivalent of a visual graph) are inadequate. We present a short background to graph theory perception and identify the problems of current graph haptic visualisation. We then propose ideas influenced by both information visualisation research and Lederman and Klatzky’s EPs in order t...
